The article is a discussion of the merits of marriage education on the couple and the family. Several programs are discussed, including the Prevention and Relationship Enhancement Program (PREP), the Couples Communication program, the Engaged Encounter program, and the Relationship Enhancement (RE) program. PREP is a voluntary program of twelve hours of sequenced lectures on topics such as communication, forgiveness, religious beliefs and practices, expectations and fun. 85 percent of couples who attended were highly satisfied with the program while 75 percent of men and 78 percent of women who attended ranked communication skills as the most helpful component. The RE program is a 2 day weekend that teaches 9 marital skills and emphasized communicating effectively. It was compared with Couples Communication and Engaged Encounter and it was found that RE had the strongest effect for those tested and appeared to reduce the rates of domestic violence.
