This fact sheet published by the Alabama Cooperative Extension System provides six steps to collaborative problem solving when teens and parents do not see eye-to-eye. The author provides an example that demonstrates the six steps, including establishing ground rules, reaching mutual understanding, brainstorming, agreeing to one or more solutions, writing down the agreement, and setting a time for follow-up. Practicing the new skills at times when there is no conflict is also suggested.
