Expression of feelings can bring acceptance, trust, and the desire for a closer relationship. An important part of expressing feelings is self-disclosure as well as recognizing and accepting one's own feelings. This fact sheet describes the limitations and negative consequences of holding back feelings and gives suggestions on how to describe feelings with names, metaphors, and figures of speech. It is important to work out a clear and accurate expression of feeling to help relationships and initiate discussion. While not specifically focused on marriages, the information regarding expressing feelings may be applied to couples.
