This fact sheet explains how listening is the most valuable skill that can be brought to interpersonal relationships. A conscious effort must be made to listen in order for it to become a skill. The fact sheet also describes shared meaning and gives guidelines for both the sender and receiver in communication to participate in shared meaning. It describes helpful listening as a two part process of attending and responding to the sender. While not specifically focused on marriages, the information regarding interpersonal relationships may be applied to couples.
