This slide presentation highlights how schools in Massachusetts are responding to gun violence and opioid abuse in students experiencing trauma. It describes the move from a deficit model to a three-tier system that supports students. The tiers include school-wide programs that support healthy relationships, small group interventions that assist students with managing mild symptoms indicative of psychological difficulties and support students who struggle with maintaining healthy relationships that impact their functioning in school, and assessment for traumatic experiences and severe mental health difficulties, followed by plans for intervention. Components of each of the tiers are described, and the role of mindfulness and grit is explained.
