Learning as a Family
A Note from the Director

When we hear the word "literacy," we often think of it in the context of reading and writing. Used more broadly, the term can mean a level of competence or knowledge in any specific area such as financial literacy. September is National Literacy Month and with school back in session, it's a perfect time to focus on improving reading and financial literacy skills. Even parents with limited literacy skills can encourage reading in children by telling them stories and providing books. President Abraham Lincoln's step-mother was illiterate, but often credited for acquiring books and encouraging his interest in learning. I hope you'll use the tips and resources below to encourage the families you serve to instill a love for learning in their children while working to improve their own literacy skills.

Your monthly tip to strengthen the relationships of those you serve. Share it - Post it - Pass it on!
In addition to tailoring services and materials to literacy levels of the individuals and families you serve, social service providers can assist caregivers and children in their learning efforts by suggesting tools and resources they can use together, like these from the National Center for Families Learning:
Wonderopolis® - a platform for learning that covers thousands of topics that can interest adults and children and fit in between daily activities.
National Literacy Directory - a searchable database of literacy services, community education programs, and testing centers. Listings range from early childhood to family literacy.
Renegade Buggies - a free phone application that helps family members learn financial literacy skills together.
Using these resources can help improve the literacy of your low literacy clients and provide them the opportunity to connect and build strong bonds with their children. You can find more resources like these here.

The Resource Center's Virtual Library has collected more than 3,000 materials in a variety of formats including fact sheets, research-to-practice briefs, brochures, pamphlets, training resources, program reports or evaluations, and research materials.

This tip sheet is for safety-net service providers who are delivering or considering teaching marriage and relationship skills to individuals with lower literacy abilities.

My Family Album is designed as an interactive educational tool for children ages 7 through 10 to work through together with either their parents or educators. The book can be used in group settings or one-on-one with children to generate conversations about healthy family relationships, interpersonal skills, and appropriate interactions within the family, school, and community.
This tip sheet provides specific tips to improve parenting skills. It is designed as an informational handout for families in support of the companion resource for providers, Tips for Service Providers: Healthy Parenting Practices.

The Families Learning Conference is the premier event focused on innovative strategies and practices in family literacy and learning, two-generation education solutions, and parent and family engagement. The target audience includes educators, family literacy staff, school administrators, education researchers, policymakers, library staff, and staff working in community-based organizations.

The Georgia Conference on Children and Families is the largest annual interdisciplinary event in Georgia designed to bring together the community that serves children and families. The conference will feature specialized tracks, plenary sessions and networking opportunities with the goal of improving outcomes for the children and families that we serve. This conference includes a full spectrum of disciplines and organizations serving Georgia's children and families, which includes child advocacy, juvenile justice, social service, education, legal counsel and the faith-based community. The conference provides a forum to improve competencies, learn from experts in the field and network with other professionals who have a wealth of experience.
